When Will The Potter’s Heron Reopen?
We know you’ve been waiting. And honestly, so have we.
The Potter’s Heron reopens on Tuesday 31st March 2026 and we cannot wait to see you back here.
And our beloved historic thatched pub has been through quite the transformation.
Now proudly part of the Heartwood Inns family, we’ve given it a multi-million-pound refurbishment that’s as sympathetic to its remarkable history as it is exciting for the future.
Whether you’re a long-time local or hearing about us for the first time, here’s everything you need to know before you visit:
A Lot of History Worth Raising a Glass To
The Potter’s Heron has been a part of this corner of Hampshire for nearly ninety years and its story is one we’re genuinely proud to be the next chapter of.
Built in 1937 as a striking mock-Tudor building, The Potter’s Heron takes its name from an old local settlement and Potter’s Heron Wood.
Its distinctive Norfolk reed thatched roof made it a landmark from the very beginning and it quickly became one of the most popular venues in the area.
Through the 1950s and 60s, it was the place to be in Hampshire, playing host to wedding receptions, dinner dances and a regular crowd that included local celebrities and Southern TV personalities. It had a certain glamour about it.
Then, in November 1966, a major fire destroyed the front of the restaurant and much of the thatch. But The Potter’s Heron is nothing if not resilient. Rebuilt just a year later, it came back slightly further from the road to make space for a larger car park and carried on.
That heritage matters to us. It’s part of why the refurbishment has been done with such care. The Potter’s Heron isn’t a place to be stripped back and started from scratch. It’s a place to be celebrated.
What to Expect from Our Refurbishment
The Potter’s Heron has always had character. What it has now is character with a whole lot of comfort to go with it.
Following a sympathetic refurbishment, we’ve thoughtfully reimagined The Potter’s Heron as a gorgeous pub with rooms.
You’ll find a warm bar, welcoming dining rooms and relaxed lounge areas designed for lingering. With space for 258 guests inside and a further 96 seats across our terrace and garden, there’s room to breathe, whatever the occasion.
Nothing has been done for the sake of it. Everything here has been chosen with your experience in mind.
58 Boutique Bedrooms in the Heart of Test Valley
If you’ve been dreaming of a Hampshire countryside escape, we have 58 beautifully designed boutique-style bedrooms ranging from Snug to Luxe. Each room comes with the kind of details that make a stay feel genuinely special: Roberts radios, Chromecast TVs, Bramley toiletries and rainfall showers.
Book directly with us and you’ll enjoy our Book Direct Promise, which means the best available prices and late check-out as standard. We also have a couple of rather lovely packages if you fancy something a little extra. Our Soufflé Away package is perfect for a treat, and the ‘Snug as a Bug’ option is just the thing for a cosy night in (or inn, if you will).
Food and Drink Well Worth the Drive

Seasonal. Sustainable. Seriously good. Our kitchen holds a prestigious three-star ‘Food Made Good’ rating from the Sustainable Restaurant Association, which is about as good as it gets when it comes to responsible, high-quality cooking.

Our menu celebrates what’s local and what’s in season, served alongside curated wines and cocktails that do the food justice. And then there’s the Sunday roast with bottomless trimmings. That’s not a typo. Bottomless. We’ll say no more.
A Pub That Loves Dogs as Much as You Do
Bringing your dog? Brilliant. We’ve made sure The Potter’s Heron is genuinely welcoming for four-legged guests, not just technically tolerant of them.

Dogs get free water and treats on arrival, and our dog-friendly bedrooms come with a thoughtful Digby Dog Pack to make their stay just as comfortable as yours. We also have a covered outdoor Dog Wash station, because muddy paws are part of a good walk and we’d rather make the clean-up easy.
